October 22, 2016, 1 to 3:30 p.m.
Drake Center - 802 W Drake, Fort Collins, CO 80526

If you were the mayor of your town, how would you help your citizens recovery from a major tornado?

How could you verify post-disaster information posted on social media was accurate?

If you had only 10 minutes to evacuate your home, which items would you grab?

The Whole Community Disaster Simulation is a fun, hands-on role-playing activity that addresses these and many more questions. Through guided roleplaying and facilitation, participants dive into the challenges facing individuals, communities and emergency managers after a major disaster.

This simulation is a FREE event hosted by Larimer County VOAD, Volunteers of America, American Red Cross and other local agencies.  This unique award winning program is being presented by Ready Montana through a grant from FEMA.

During this 2.5 hour session participants receive a role to play - whether it be as a first responder, a nonprofit director, a city council-person, a media rep., a victim, etc. - and together participants work to engage and solve the proposed problem with the greatest efficiency. The time will consist of 30 minutes of briefing and receiving roles, 1 hour of active simulation, and 1 hour of debrief, review, and planning for future disasters.

This is a fun and informative way to become more aware and better prepared to handle disaster events that affect our community. No prior knowledge of disasters or emergency management is needed. All you need to do is click on the link below to reserve your space. Spaces are limited.

If you would like to host a similar event in your own agency, please join us in the morning of 10/22 at the Drake Center for a special "Train the Trainer" session. This will be held from 9:30 - noon and you can learn how to create your own simulation from the award-winning developers of this program. Click HERE to reserve your space for the Train the Trainer session.

Push Notifications to Remind Users to Take Simple Steps to Prepare for Disasters, Provide Easy Access to Information on How to Be Ready for Fires, Severe Weather, and other Hazards

WASHINGTON – Today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) launched a new feature to its free smartphone app that will enable users to receive push notifications to their devices to remind them to take important steps to prepare their homes and families for disasters. The reminder feature allows users to receive pre-scheduled safety and preparedness tips, including testing smoking alarms, practicing a fire escape plan, updating emergency kits and replacing smoke alarm batteries.
“Our lives are increasingly busy and on-the-go,” said Deputy Administrator of Protection and National Preparedness Tim Manning. “Today, we turn to mobile devices and technology to help us stay more organized and connected. This new feature to FEMA’s app will make it easier for families to remember to take potentially life-saving actions that we all should be thinking about more often.”
“In just two minutes, a home fire can become life-threatening,” said U.S. Fire Administrator Ernest Mitchell Jr. “Remembering to take small steps to prepare, such as ensuring your smoke alarm is properly maintained and practicing your home fire escape plan, will reduce fire fatalities and ensure our communities are safer. We hope this new feature to FEMA’s app will help save lives by encouraging more families to be prepared.”
The new reminder feature builds upon several innovative tools already built into the app.  In addition to push notifications, the app also provides a customizable checklist of emergency supplies, maps of open shelters and open recovery centers, and tips on how to survive natural and manmade disasters. The FEMA app also offers a feature that enables users to receive push notifications of weather alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations across the nation.
Some other key features of the app include:
  • Weather Alerts: Users can elect to receive alerts on severe weather happening in specific areas they select, even if the phone is not located in the area, making it easy to follow severe weather that may be threatening family and friends.
  • Safety Tips: Tips on how to stay safe before, during, and after over 20 types of hazards, including floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.
  • Disaster Reporter: Users can upload and share disaster-related photos.
  • Maps of Disaster Resources: Users can locate and receive driving directions to open shelters and disaster recovery centers.
  • Apply for Assistance: The app provides easy access to apply for federal disaster assistance.
  • Information in Spanish: The app defaults to Spanish-language content for smartphones that have Spanish set as their default language.
The latest version of the FEMA app is available for free in the App Store for Apple devices and Google Play for Android devices.  Users who already have the app downloaded on their device should download the latest update for the reminder alerts feature to take effect. The reminders are available in English and Spanish and are located in the “Prepare” section of the FEMA App.

Widespread Outages Due to Spring Blizzard:
Poudre Valley REA is experiencing widespread outages from a heavy, wet spring snow and blizzard conditions. PVREA expects members to experience a prolonged outage, possibly throughout the evening of March 23 and into tomorrow, March 24. We are urging members to be prepared; view tips below.

All PVREA crews are deployed working on all of the outages. We are urging members to report hazards and outages by calling 1-800-432-1012.

"With heavy, wet snow affecting power across our entire service area, all PVREA crews are deployed and working to repair lines and restore outages. We are urging members to stay safe during this storm, and report hazards and outages by calling PVREA at 1-800-432-1012. Thank you for your support and patience as our crews restore power to your neighborhood as quickly as possible," CEO Jeff Wadsworth said.

Members can stay updated by checking our  Facebook andTwitter  feeds and by viewing our outage map.

Members should prepare to remain inside during this prolonged outage and use these tips if you have lost power at your home:
  • Stay inside, and dress warm. Staying warm is a priority. Dress in several layers of loose fitting, lightweight warm clothing. Wear hats, mittens and scarves.
  • If you plan to use a generator, know how to operate it safely
  • Close off unneeded rooms to keep the heat in your living areas.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible to keep your food cold. If power is out longer than 4 hours, keep perishable items in a cooler with ice. Make ice outside. A full freezer can remain cold enough for 48 hours, and half a freezer full 24 hours.
  • When using an alternative heat source, follow operating instructions, use fire safeguards, and be sure to properly ventilate. Always keep a multipurpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher nearby, and know how to use it.
  • Place draft block at the bottom of doors to minimize cold drafts from entering the house.
  • Keep a close eye on the temperature in your home. Infants and people over the age of 65 are often more susceptible to the cold. You may want to stay with friends or relatives or go to a shelter if you cannot keep your home warm.
  • Unplug all appliances and electronics so they won't get damaged with power restoration.
  • If power lines are on the ground, stay far away from them and warn others to stay away.  Contact PVREA and let us know because the lines could still be live.
  • Any power line that is dead could become energized at any moment due to power restoration or backup generators.
  • Check on any elderly neighbors and make sure they are safe.
Please continue to call us with any outage updates at 1-800-432-1012 and stay safe.

*NEW* FROM XCEL ENERGY
Colorado is experiencing blizzard-like weather conditions with widespread power outages.

Currently Colorado is experiencing blizzard-like conditions on Wednesday, March 23. Approximately 108,000 customers throughout cities and communities in our Colorado territory are experiencing electric outages as of 10 am MT. A blizzard warning has been issued for Denver and areas to the east until 6 p.m.  MT with strong, gusty winds up to 55 mph expected.  We currently have crews working as quickly and safely as possible to assess each situation and formulate restoration plans as soon as they can reach the areas impacted by the storm.

Updates will be provided on this page, and on the social media page for Xcel Energy Colorado, which can be viewed at  THIS LINK

If you experience a power outage, please report it on our website. You can also view outage information on this page, which is updated every 10 minutes. In addition, you can report an outage by calling 1-800-895-4999 and pressing 1; please remain on the line if you need to report an urgent issue.

Here are important safety reminders for customers during these conditions:
  • All available crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to assess the situation and restore power.
  • Stay away from downed power lines. All downed and sagging power lines, even if they are not moving or sparking, are dangerous and should never be approached.
  • When it is safe, please check your gas meter to ensure it is not covered with snow and ice. If it is covered, carefully remove any snow or ice by hand.
  • Check for mast damages. If there are damage to the mast, a licensed electrician must make repairs before service can be restored to your home.

CDOT:

At this point it may be easier to list what is open vs. everything that is closed.  So... just stay home. It's a mess out there. Passenger vehicle traction law in place throughout the region.  All passenger vehicles must use adequate snow tires,chains,AWD/4WD or alternative traction devices. Cars are having difficulty getting traction (especially up hill) in this wet, slick snow.

Highway 34 at CR 69 - 11:00 AM

Power outages have caused issues with traffic lights. Additionally the snow is sticking to traffic lights and stop signs in some areas making it hard to navigate intersections.

To get more information regarding specific conditions in your area, please visit cotrip.org.

To see a cool interactive map that shows you were the snowplows are active, please CLICK HERE

The Larimer VOAD will continue to monitor conditions from the safety from our warm homes! We do not anticipate any VOAD response at this time, but will send out more notification if something changes.

SAVE THE DATE: Our next general VOAD meeting will be held on April 11th at 2:00 PM. More details to follow soon.

If you have any questions, please email Laura Levy at laura@larimerLTRG.org or call 303-931-8080. Email will get you the fastest response.

Stay safe and warm out there!
